Is this for food only?
No — track anything the household shares: cleaning products, bathroom supplies, light bulbs, pet food, whatever runs out and causes arguments.
Do we have to keep the counts up to date by hand?
Much less than you'd think. Ticking items off the shopping list tops up the matching inventory counts automatically, and anything that drops to its minimum goes back on the list without being asked. Manual edits are really only for the things you use up without buying.
